FAQs

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that dates back thousands of years. It consists of a number of thin needles being inserted into specific points along the body to help promote healing and relaxation.

How many sessions will I need?

The amount of treatments you’ll need will depend on your individual case. Each patient is assessed by a practitioner at the initial intake and followed up on at every appointment. Some conditions may resolve relatively soon, within 6 sessions. Other chronic conditions can take much longer. Many patients will return seasonally or for periodic maintenance treatments.

Is acupuncture painful?

Most people report that acupuncture is a painless procedure. You may feel mild discomfort at the initial needle insertion or a heavy, achy feeling when we manipulate the needles (this is called de qi and is a good sign that we’ve found the location we’re looking for). Many patients find the process relaxing and some even fall asleep.

What can I expect from a session?

Each 50-minute treatment consists of a follow-up assessment with your practitioner, followed by needling, and then relaxation while the needles do their work. To prepare for your treatments, you should make sure to eat beforehand and keep hydrated. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes are recommended so your practitioner can easily reach any necessary points.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is very safe when practiced by a trained and certified professional. It has very few side effects. We follow strict cleaning procedures and use single-use, sterile needles.

Can I safely do acupuncture when I'm in treatment for XYZ?

Generally speaking, yes, acupuncture is a safe complementary therapy for Western medicine, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage. We encourage patients to disclose all the treatments they’re undergoing to any healthcare practitioners they’re seeing. If we would not recommend acupuncture for you, we will let you know.
